You are here for a purpose and not an extra part

The movie Hugo had a dialogue that left a great impression on me.

Hugo is a boy who lost his father. His father taught him how to fix clocks at a young age. Hugo has been fixing mechanical parts thereafter.

Hugo and Isabelle (Hugo’s friend) were talking on a clock tower that oversee the night scene of Paris.

On finding a purpose, Isabelle was commenting the automaton (robot) looks sad. Hugo replied, “I think he’s just waiting to work again, to do what he’s supposed to do.”

“Everything has a purpose, even machines.  …Maybe that’s why broken machines make me so sad.  Maybe it’s the same thing with people.”

Like clock work, he said that “I’d imagine the whole world was one big machine. Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. They always come with the exact amount they need. So I figured, if the entire world was one big machine, I couldn’t be an extra part. I had to be here for some reason.”

There couldn’t be an extra part… you are here to fulfill a need of a society. Some people (parts) may be more important (crucial) to the society (machine), but everyone (part) must do what he (it) is suppose to do for the society (machine) to function properly.

Do not belittle yourself or your contribution.
