Before Enlightenment; chop wood, carry water. After Enlightenment; chop wood, carry water.

by Alvin on April 17, 2010

This is a zen proverb but I am not sure who said it. I am also not sure what it meant and how it originated. I just know it meant something to me, not in the zen way though.

My interpretation is closely linked to the tension between pursuing passion and being realistic, which I talked about previously. Is there a difference between what you are doing now and what you want to do? I believe many people would say there is a difference. And some may add, “I will do this and that when I become rich.” In this case, is the person doing things because he enjoys them or he is just doing things to enjoy his rich status? For example, a person may not truly enjoy playing golf, but he play it because it is a rich man’s sport. He enjoys doing it only because it makes him feel rich and that he has arrived.

My point is, we should not have a big difference in what we do prior and after an achievement. So that at least there are some activities that we can truly say we enjoy and keep us happy. Are there something that you enjoy right now, before your achievement? Do you see yourself doing this even after you have achieved your life goals?

Singaporeans love to eat so how about this: Before becoming rich; eat hawker food. After becoming rich; eat hawker food.

I think most likely, I’ll be this:

Before rich, earn money;
After rich, earn money.

Earning money can be fun. It’s can also be an intellectually stimulating activity, depending on how you earn that money ;)

yup, actually, many years before I became financially free, I kept imagining what would I do when I reached Financial Freedom, sail around the world and just relax and do nothing…..

More than 1 year ago when i reached Financial Freedom, it turns out that I continue to do the things that I’ve been doing……eg. everyday I would read up on things relating to Finance and share what I learned with others…..only difference is that since year 2009, I decided to share my knowledge/experience in a more structured way, through various Seminars and my book “Mastering Your Personal Finance”…

Relaxing and doing nothing is NOT really what I look towards to afterall…….it is actually a “relaxation” to me when I do what I do daily….

Yeah. I realised we cannot just “retire” after financial freedom. Retire should mean doing things that we like to do, have no pressure in doing. It can be something that we have been doing prior to financial freedom.
