Money is a by-product

If you want to be rich, do not aim for money!

This is really a true secret of all rich people – money is not an end point, it is a by product. A reward that comes along the way while you are working passionately on what you believe is worthwhile doing.

An excerpt from the book, “All the Money in the World“,

“Wharton School Management professor Raphael Amit argues that as hard as it is to believe, money really isn’t what drives most entrepreneurs. “What we found in a very deep study of entrepreneurs is that wealth is not the primary driver,” he says. “No one is saying that they don’t like wealth; but what matters more is the innovation, the intense commitment they have to an idea, and the difference it can make. Money is the by-product.”"

Even the world’s richest investor, Warren Buffett says, “If you’re doing something you love, you’re more likely to put your all into it, and that generally equates to making money.”

Famous black autobiographer, Maya Angelou puts it well, “You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you.

You can watch a short video about the 8 secrets of success, where Richard St. John also mentioned about the importance of doing what you love.

For myself, my ‘mentor’ told me do not aim for financial freedom (you can read the story on this post). He advise me to look for what I really want to do. I will do a much better work if it is something that I have passion for, and by doing it well, money tends to come afterall. If I am aiming to have lots of money, what would I want to do after I have them? If I have $50 billion, what do I want to do? Will I be happy and lead a meaningful life?

I have also heard “if you love what you do, you will never have to work another day in your life.”

So do you love what you are doing? If you are doing it for money, you will not be performing. And money will actually stay further away from you.
