Bigfatpurse comments: A very unusual book with fascinating ideas and interesting commentaries. Ferriss shows his wit in his writings and shares his obsession with both efficiency and excellence in his approach to life. Living life is his philosophy and he really puts it in your face by confronting why you are delaying the life you want to lead. Are you saving sex for old age? It is a very practical guide for anyone who wants to pursue a life they want.
Book Summary:
He organized his book through an acronym: DEAL where D = Definition, E = Elimination, A = Automation and L = Liberation.
I. DEFINITION
There is a New Rich which is different from the conventional rich. A few important distinctions:
New Rich:
- To have distributed regular periods of getaways or mini-retirements throughout life
- To make lots of money for specific reasons
- To remove clutter in life
Gather Your Courage
He mentioned that, “Most people will choose unhappiness over uncertainty.” In other words, people tend to remain status quo and are afraid to venture into the things they want to do, and hence, always live under emotional suppression. Ferriss wants us to ask ourselves – “What is the worst case scenario for pursuing what you want to do?” To conquer fear is to define it first. Most likely, it would not be as bad as what your initial fear suggests. Next, you can take measures to avoid the worst case scenario which further reduces the level of fear. In addition, you should ask yourself what are you losing if you do not pursue your goals now? “If you telescope out 10 years and know with 100% certainty that it is a path of disappointment and regret, and if we define risk as “the likelihood of an irreversible negative outcome,” inaction is the greatest risk of all.” Match your fears and your goals – which one do you want to realize?
Important phrase – “What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.”
Be Unrealistic
Unrealistic goals are easier to achieve! (No, it is not a misprint.) Here are 2 reasons why:
1) 99% aims for mediocre goals since they do not think they are capable of achieving great goals. Hence, competition is tough
2) Great goals inspire much more and enable you to overcome obstacles along the way
Ask “What Excites Me?”
One overused life goal term is ‘happiness’. Ferriss believes ‘excitement’ is a more precise description – “Excitement is the more practical synonym for happiness, and it is precisely what you should strive to chase. It is the cure-all.” Ask “What would excite me?” and not “What do I want?” or “What are my goals?”
