It was so kind of him – for someone who gets quite a regular media exposure to meet a nobody. The meeting was set without much coordination needed. It took 2 emails to hook me up with this person. I wasn’t expecting much but if I did not try, there would not be a chance. Thus, I better give it a go. During the meet up, he did told me the second email made the difference, not so much of the content but the intent – an extra mile I supposed, more than others who gave up after sending one.
Like the first call he made, our first meet up felt a little awkward and a loss of words. But eventually the conversation improved and in fact, he became harsh and direct, “at the end of the day, is what each person brings onto the table.” Wow, Asians rarely get this kind of direct meaning in their faces. “Time is man’s greatest asset…”, I knew I better have to make use of his time. As I persisted in being humble and attentive, he changed totally. It seems like the initial stage was a test, to see how I would react. Apparently, I think I got it right as he began to share.
So what about his journey to his first million? Is there something that I can do so I can reach my first million too? He gave a definite YES and the key is to find a purpose in life. Hey, you must be thinking that’s so cliche. But I agree, I have been trying to find my purpose in life and it is still fuzzy at the moment. I never really had ‘accepted’ the importance to think ahead of what you want to do in life till the recent 1-2 years. I believe I am like you, since young we are bombarded by “find purpose” and “set goals” such that they have been filtered out effectively from our minds permanently. Just to shut the person, one would say, “I know”. I guessed we did not really know. Knowing is acceptance, and also to believe with faith.
Find your passion is the next advice he gave. Do something that you like so that you will continue doing it even after you have achieved financial freedom. It must be something that satisfaction gained from it is not solely money. In fact, money comes to you because you love doing what you do. I told him I have an interpretation of it – self-discipline cannot be trusted as it is of limited strength. It is basically a suppression of emotions. Humans after all act on emotions. Passion on the other hand is about emotion and needless to say, it is stronger than self-discipline. Passion is needed to ride you through all obstacles, from the smallest to the largest, in order to obtain your goal.
Next he told me about his mentors, how it was the kindness of others who helped him along his journey to his goals. He believes and enjoys passing it on. He mentioned one of the principles of law of attraction – the universe is of abundance, which means there is enough for everyone. Thus, there is no harm to pass it on to others, as you know you will not be worse off. He feels joyful just by doing it and his condition for helping me is that I must pass on to others. All of a sudden, I realized I was already doing it – besides this blog, I have been encouraging my friends and colleagues to make goals. Because, I believe goals are your desires in life, and naturally, you will be happy when you achieve them. I want people to happy and he mentioned it is important for me to be happy first, so I can have the capacity and radiate happiness to others.
Linking back to finding the purpose in life, he said that happiness is everyone’s ultimate purpose. However, do not stop there, the next question to ask is what makes you happy? What are the things you do that will make you happy? Probably this is likely to be where your passion is. It is not a fast process he admitted, and it takes soul searching, self directed questions and reflections to find it.
It had been a 2-hour conversation and he ended by telling me that I can contact him anytime if I need help or advice. That was the greatest thing I wanted out of the session – the permission to learn from him. I was not looking for a fish to eat, I wanted to learn to fish, so I can eat forever. I have received a great christmas present this year. Thank you.

Hi Junxiong, thank you for your support. As for who the person is, I don’t think it is time to disclose, maybe in the future.
Hope you don’t mind.

Hi Alvin
I am an avid follower of your blog. Very happy for you that you have a great Christmas present. It’s certainly a privilege to meet a millionaire who is so humble and take time to meet you.
I have also got the best gift this Christmas – my faith, after years of “soul searching, self directed questions and reflections to find it”(quote from you). Hope I can share it with you some day.
May you be blessed with peace, love, joy and good health always!
