The complete phrase – “The market, like the Lord, helps those who help themselves. But unlike the Lord, the market does not forgive those who know not what they do.”
Warren Buffett always emphasizes that an investor needs to know what he/she is doing when investing. He/she should remain in his/her circle of competence. Indeed, he practices what he preaches – During the 2000 tech stock bull run, he refused to buy technology stocks because he did not understand technology (he didn’t even have a computer in his office!). Many investors felt that he was missing out a great deal of profits from tech stocks. Even his close friend, Bill Gates, could not convince him to invest in Microsoft. However, Buffett had the last laugh when the tech bubble burst.
